A mechanic caught the attention of internet users after sharing the cause and revealing a solution for a characteristic noise in older GM cars.

Andrew Parker, who owns the Whistlers Auto Repair shop in Oklahoma (USA), posted a video on his TikTok profile aimed at owners of GM vehicles produced in the early 2000s.

This noise, which sounds like a loud thump, is frequently heard by owners of older Chevrolet models such as the Sierra, Silverado, or Tahoe. The sound comes from the hood and usually appears after driving over a pothole or a speed bump.

According to Parker, the issue lies in the steering column, and fortunately, the solution is simple. “The column dries out. You literally have to relubricate it like you’re pumping a grease gun,” Parker explained.

“Do this about 15 times. No more weird noises, and it will redistribute the grease that’s inside that two-piece shaft,” the mechanic added in the clip, which has already received more than 1.7 thousand views.

As demonstrated by Parker, the steering shafts used by GM vehicles between 1999 and 2006 suffered significantly from lubrication issues. As a result, forcing the old grease to move across the sliding surfaces again usually makes the noise disappear.
